The impact of the patient on the practitioner may influence not only the thinking and emotions of the practitioner: it may take a physical form, evoking physical sensations or change in physical functioning. Stories only the body can tell is an exploration of somatic countertransference with specific reference to psychosomatic symptoms. Adrian will use clinical material to demonstrate how he came to recognise that physical experiences in himself were countertransference events and processes and how this had a profound effect on his understanding of, and approach to, patients with psychosomatic symptoms.
