Summer Newsletter 2026

Summer has a way of inviting us to linger.

The days become a little longer, familiar routines begin to soften, and many of us find ourselves looking back over the year whilst quietly wondering what lies ahead. It is a season of endings and beginnings, of departures and arrivals, where change often sits alongside reflection.

Yet beyond the warmth of the season, many of us remain mindful of a wider world marked by uncertainty. Across communities, organisations and societies, we continue to encounter conflict, division and rapid change. In times such as these, it can be tempting to seek certainty before there has been time to understand.

Perhaps this is why psychodynamic thinking feels especially important. It reminds us that beneath every organisation are relationships. Beneath every role is a person. Beneath much of what we encounter are emotional currents that shape how we lead, collaborate, care and make sense of one another. Rather than asking us to know too quickly, psychodynamic thinking invites us to remain curious, to stay with complexity, and to recognise that understanding often emerges through dialogue rather than certainty.

Across APPCIOS, we continue to cultivate spaces where this kind of thinking can flourish. Through our webinars, reflective groups, experiential learning, supervision and organisational consultancy, we remain committed to creating places where ideas can be lived with, where differences can be thought about, and where relationships become the foundation from which understanding grows.

As you move through the Newsletter, you may find yourself drawn towards something new, or perhaps something that quietly meets you where you already are. There is no right place to begin only an invitation to stay curious about whatever captures your attention

Community Meeting

Sunday 11th October | 10.00–11.30am

Our Community Meetings continue to offer a place where members can pause, think together and remain curious about the emotional life of the world we share. They are less about reaching agreement and more about creating a space where different experiences, perspectives and uncertainties can be held in conversation.

Our last gathering brought together members from a wide range of professional and personal backgrounds. Together we reflected on how difficult it can be to keep thinking when we are faced with uncertainty, conflict and the many anxieties present in our organisations, communities and wider society.

We found ourselves wondering about the human tendency, particularly in times of anxiety, to seek the safety of like-minded groups, and how easily fear and exclusion can become projected into those who feel different from ourselves. Alongside this, we thought about the ways personal, organisational and intergenerational trauma can quietly shape how we encounter one another.

What felt especially hopeful was the group's commitment to staying with these conversations. Members shared experiences of responding to prejudice and racism with thoughtfulness and compassion, finding ways to hold onto curiosity without retreating into polarisation or conflict. Rather than seeking certainty, the group demonstrated the value of remaining open to complexity and difference

Perhaps most importantly, we recognised that the Community Meeting itself becomes a temporary place of belonging. Not because everyone thinks alike, but because we share a commitment to listening, reflecting and allowing understanding to emerge in relationship. It is our hope that these ways of thinking continue to accompany us beyond the meeting itself and into the organisations, communities and relationships that we are each part of.

An Online APPCIOS Group Relations Conference

Thinking Together in a Fractured World

16–19 October 2026

As we navigate a world increasingly marked by uncertainty, division and complexity, it can become difficult to remain curious about ourselves, one another and the organisations to which we belong. There is often a pull towards certainty, familiar positions and like-minded groups, just at the moments when thoughtful dialogue may be needed most.

APPCIOS Group Relations Conferences offer something different.

Rather than learning about organisational dynamics, participants are invited to learn through experience. The conference becomes a temporary organisation, creating a unique opportunity to observe and reflect on the emotional and unconscious processes that emerge within and between groups as they unfold in real time.

Together, we will explore questions of identity, role, authority, leadership and belonging. We will attend to our own experiences, the experiences of others, and the ways in which organisations shape us, just as we shape them. Through this shared enquiry, participants have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of unconscious dynamics and consider how this learning can be taken back into their own workplaces, communities and professional roles.

This conference also offers a rare opportunity to bring together practitioners from across the psychoanalytic and psychodynamic community. Therapists working in consulting rooms sit alongside those working in organisations, therapeutic communities, health, education and social care, creating a rich and diverse learning environment where different perspectives can be thought about together.

Whether your work is with individuals, groups or organisations, the conference provides an opportunity to experience psychodynamic thinking as a living process, one that develops not only through ideas, but through relationship, reflection and participation.

We add new material to the APPCIOS library shelves all the time, as you may know, but the best contributions are always from members themselves. Do you have an experience or a topic of enquiry or research you`d like to share with fellow members? If so, the best way to do that is to write about it so we can put it on an appropriate shelf in the library. If that sounds daunting, don`t worry; we`re to help you communicate what you really want to say in the right language.

For those of you who haven`t met us before:

Jackie is a retired psychotherapist with many years in the business world prior to changing careers. She now runs the APPCIOS Film Group with Susan McIver.

Mandy has spent over 45 years in the book publishing world and is now keeping her hand in as a consultant literary agent.

Tony is a retired GP who runs the APPCIOS Reflective Practice Group and is also Chair of Age UK London.\

Free Discussion Groups

Psychodynamic thinking grows through relationship. Our free discussion groups provide opportunities to explore ideas, reflect on practice and remain curious in the company of others. Each group has its own character, but all share a commitment to thoughtful dialogue, openness and the belief that understanding develops most fully when we think together.

A Space to Think - Paul Terry

These meetings are open to APPCIOS members, counsellors, therapists and others who have registered an interest in APPCIOS and psychodynamic ideas. There is no agenda simply the opportunity to think together using the psychodynamic ideas to illuminate our thoughts. Provision of time and space for us to think with one another is being more and more reduced in the workplace by employers and the increasing pressure of workload. More widely in our troubled, precarious times thinking often seems to be too painful.

Film Discussion Group – Jackie Horsburgh & Susan McIver

The Film Group first met during Covid times as a way of opening up an opportunity to meet online to discuss films chosen by the group, and also to consider themes and characters from a psychodynamic perspective to deepen our understanding. So, it has been running a few years now with different people joining along the way adding new imaginings into the mix. Bringing in different reactions means we never know the direction our joint voices will take us. Sometimes we consider “themes” or perhaps films that help us make sense of our current times. Films are not always “liked” by everyone in the group but our lively conversation usually adds to our individual encounter and provides a different and unique value to our overall experience of the film.

Psychoanalytic Reading Group – Annie Pesskin

Annie Pesskin runs a friendly psychoanalytic reading group once a month on a Wednesday evening on Zoom where she invites a leading author to bring along their new book. A chapter is shared in advance to all participants and the group meets for an hour or so to discuss it. All are welcome as long as they are in some form of training or are qualified therapists, payment for attendance is a £10 donation to APPCIOS. Email annie.pesskin@gmail.com to be added to the list.

Reflective Practice Group – Tony Burch

'The Reflective Practice Group (RPG) is an informal discussion group for psychodynamic practitioners to share experiences and discuss various and varied aspects of their clinical practice. Mostly, we act as an unofficial supervision group, but whatever the topic, we provide a supportive, confidential space. All are welcome! This is a drop-in group, and while we encourage regular attendance, it is by no means compulsory. We meet on alternate Thursdays at 6.15 pm for an hour

Gathering Threads – Aly Thompson & Trudy Darien

Professional identity is rarely formed all at once. It emerges gradually through practice, supervision, relationships and reflection. Gathering Threads offers Senior Associate Members a place to think together about this unfolding journey, providing companionship, curiosity and a sense of belonging within the APPCIOS community.

Developing Psychoanalytic Thinking in Individuals, Groups and Organisations

APPCIOS offers a range of learning opportunities that support the development of psychoanalytic thinking across clinical, organisational and consultancy settings.

For some, these webinars form part of a carefully considered developmental pathway, providing the knowledge, experience and reflective spaces that contribute towards APPCIOS accreditation. For others, they offer opportunities for continuing professional development, enabling experienced practitioners to deepen their thinking, revisit foundational ideas, or explore new areas of psychodynamic practice.

Whether you are taking your first steps into psychodynamic thinking or extending an established professional practice, our learning spaces are designed to support curiosity, reflection and dialogue. Theory is explored not as something to be mastered quickly, but as something to be lived with, questioned and integrated into professional life over time.

More than webinars, these are learning communities where ideas develop through relationship, discussion and shared experience, creating opportunities to think together about individuals, groups and organisations.

APPCIOS is offering a newly accredited Psychoanalytically Oriented Experiential Group starting this September.

In a world increasingly shaped by disconnection, geopolitical conflict, social fragmentation, and the accelerating pace of technological change it is our continuing capacity to think, to stay curious about our shared emotional life, and to recognise the impact we have on one another that holds us together.

Cultivating relational depth is not simply a professional skill, it is a form of collective resilience. It reminds us that meaning is co‑created, identity is shaped through relationships, and learning emerges through dialogue, encounter, and the courage to stay present with complexity.

Who: The group will be a closed space for a maximum of 8 participants and will be co-facilitated by Phil Faulkner and Catherine Watters.

Where: On Zoom.

When: Weekly on a Friday 12.00-13.15 during term time (36 group sessions over each academic year).

Why: The group experience offers a different learning opportunity to individual therapy. One that is a necessary element of the APPCIOS approach to developing psychodynamic organisational thinking and practice. It can be considered as an accessible and affordable option for APPCIOS members who are:

· Working towards Full Membership as a Psychodynamic Organisational Therapist.

· Looking for an alternative to individual therapy.

· Or simply want to further their experience and knowledge of groups.

Group participation can contribute to an individual’s CPD and will count towards the two years of experiential learning required for Full Membership.

What: In the psychoanalytic tradition the group will have no fixed agenda. Providing instead the opportunity for you to navigate an immersive learning experience of relational dynamics and collective engagement that will deepen your understanding of how groups work.

The intention is for the group experience to be deeply enriching and meaningful, both personally and professionally, but it is also important to note that participating will usually include the emergence of previously unconscious material for the group to think about, and this can sometimes feel difficult, confusing and disorientating for some or all members of the group, as it is thought about and processed.

As co-facilitators Phil and Catherine’s role is to provide a safe and containing space for all of this to take place, guiding and supporting the group’s thinking, whilst holding an overview of both group functioning and the wellbeing of participants.

Cost: £325 per participant per term, paid in advance.

Primitive States and the Growth of Mind

This twelve-week theory course offers an introduction to key psychodynamic ideas about the development of the mind and the ways early emotional experiences continue to shape how we think, feel, and relate to others. The course explores concepts including primitive anxieties, defences, projection, projective identification, introjection, containment, and the development of thinking.

Through discussion of classical and contemporary psychoanalytic ideas, participants will have the opportunity to develop a foundation in psychodynamic thinking and begin to make links between theory and their own professional experience. The course provides a space to explore how these concepts may help us understand emotional experiences, relationships, and moments of difficulty within our work with children, adults, families, and wider professional settings. Developing an understanding of primitive states of mind and early emotional development also provides a foundation for recognising how unconscious processes can emerge within groups and organisations, helping participants begin to apply psychodynamic thinking across different professional contexts.

Participants may gain a deeper understanding of how early relational experiences influence psychic development, how anxiety affects thinking and relationships, and how psychodynamic ideas can support curiosity, reflection, and thoughtful practice.

Introduction to Groups and Organisations: A Psychodynamic Perspective

Drawing on key psychoanalytic thinkers, the course considers the relationship between the individual and the group, and how emotions, anxieties, roles, and relationships shape organisational life.

The course explores themes including group dynamics, authority, leadership, dependency, conflict, projection, and containment. Alongside developing an understanding of key concepts, participants will have opportunities to begin making links between psychodynamic theory and their own work experiences, using ideas to reflect on communication, relationships, organisational culture, and the emotional life of teams and systems.

The course offers an accessible introduction to organisational psychodynamic thinking and provides a reflective space for participants to develop their understanding of groups, workplaces, and the ways unconscious processes can influence collaboration and change.

Observing Organisations

An APPCIOS observational webinar series

It aims to help participants sharpen their observational skills and begin learning more about organisational dynamics. There is no set reading although some will be suggested on an as and when basis through each week's discussion.

Participants will be expected to write-up their observation of a particular situation in their workplaces in enough details for the webinar group to discuss. Ideally, this observation is of a workplace other than your own. Previous participants' observations include; a pub, tattoo parlour, child-care organisations, library, an amateur dramatic society's rehearsals.

We will meet on Thursday evenings between 20.00 and 21.15 hrs.

Enhanced Work Discussion Group

Running weekly in term time on Mondays at 2.30-4pm - £320 per term Facilitated by Emma Higgs & Mark Waddington
A steady, containing space to bring one’s working life into thought.
Through shared reflection, participants learn from the emotional texture of their work discovering how meaning and insight grow in company with others. New members are welcomed into the group at the start of each term.

A webinar course on some of the thinking of W R Bion

This course is designed for those already familiar with Bion's terminology. They may have already completed previous Bion webinar series with APPCIOS. It is therefore at an intermediate not beginner level. Again, it will aim to explore the individual as a group being, but at greater depth.

The series will run on Wednesday evenings throughout Autumn and early Winter 2026.

Meetings take place between 20.00 and 21.15 hours. The start date is Wednesday 9th September 2026

Psychoanalytic Theory Webinar

An APPCIOS webinar rolling on a termly basis

This webinar is at intermediate/advance level.

It has already been running for several 10-week terms. It therefore has a cohort of participants looking to use it as a core part of their APPCIOS training. It also includes members seeking to extend their understanding of psychoanalytic theory and thus use it for CPD. It is looking to recruit 3 more CPD members.

The concepts and theories discussed include those of Winnicott, Klein, Britton, Freud, Bion, and Fairbairn.

There is no set reading list as each week I suggest the next week's reading on the basis of where the group discussion has been heading.

We meet on Tuesdays from 20.00 to 21.15hrs.

Psychodynamics of Race and Ethnicity

A four-week once-weekly webinar course led by Trudy Darien and Devika Dhar.

Cost: £120 per person

This course takes as its starting point the fact that we all belong to ethnic groups, and that regardless of our racial origins we have all been shaped by our experiences of racial and ethnic identity. Using statistical information to generate discussion, Trudy and Devika invite the group to approach this subject from an experiential and exploratory position, facilitating thought and discussion about the feeling and experience of ethnicity, race, racism and othering in our personal and working lives, and relating this psychodynamic theory. Therapeutic Supervision and Role Consultancy

A one-year once-weekly webinar course with Emma Higgs and Jenny Sprince.

Role consultancy/therapeutic supervision is a specialist methodology that adds another dimension to traditional consultation/supervision: it considers the internal world of the supervisee, and explores the emotional impact on them of their work with their clients and their staﬀ, as well as exploring the dynamics of their teams and of the organisation in which their work takes place.

Due to high demand, we are running another therapeutic supervision webinar on Wednesday evenings 5pm -6.15pm starting in September 2026. This webinar will have the same format as the existing webinar and will be run by Emma Higgs and Phil Faulkner.

Our new training in Leadership & Consultancy.

This is a portfolio training intended for experienced psychodynamic and psychoanalytic clinicians. Taken together, they constitute an advanced training in APPCIOS-accredited Organisational Consultancy. But each webinar can also be taken independently, as CPD for APPCIOS members.

Exploring Supervision Webinar Series

We would appreciate expressions of interest for a course of webinars currently in preparation expanding upon the introductory series we successfully ran last year. Combining theory and practice with ample opportunity to hear about and present supervisory work across the range of participant contexts extending over 3x 10-week terms on Friday afternoons. Webinar content will explore engagement, emotional development, power and accountability, unconscious processes, supervisory contexts as well as conclusions and those completing the series may be eligible to subsequently apply for membership of the British Association of Psychoanalytic & Psychodynamic Supervisors. Participants will need to have at least three years post-qualification experience after completing their professional training course and may be offering supervision or approaching doing so.

New Ideas

Exploring Psychoanalytic Insight into Organisations

We would appreciate any expressions of interest for an idea we are in the early stages of conceiving and currently focused on a series of webinars exploring psychoanalytic thinking and organisations. We had originally wanted an opportunity to look at published writing on international conflict before finding a mutual interest in the organisational behaviour that may bely or contribute to discord and dispute. We would like to curate a series of potentially monthly webinars that will look at writing covering unconscious processes expressed in a wide range of issues from child protection, caring to leadership and psychoanalytic thinking about conflict.

A New Developmental Pathway – January 2027

As APPCIOS continues to develop its learning community, we are delighted to announce a new integrated developmental pathway beginning in January 2027.

Alongside our existing programmes, we will be re-introducing Infant Observation and an opportunity to do a Young Child Observation, each accompanied by a dedicated Process Group. Together, these learning spaces are designed to support the gradual development of observational capacity, psychodynamic thinking and professional identity.

Observation lies at the heart of psychoanalytic learning. It asks us to slow down, to notice before we interpret, and to remain open to emotional experience as it unfolds. The accompanying Process Group provides a reflective space in which participants can think together about their observations, their responses and the ways in which learning develops through relationship over time.

Whether undertaken as part of the APPCIOS developmental pathway or as continuing professional development, these programmes reflect our commitment to learning that is experiential, relational and grounded in thoughtful enquiry.

We look forward to sharing further details over the coming months.

Every Member

The people behind the thinking.

One of the greatest strengths of APPCIOS is the diversity of its membership. Across our community, members work in consulting rooms, therapeutic communities, schools, universities, health services, charities, fostering agencies and organisations of every kind. Although our roles and settings differ, we are connected by a shared commitment to psychodynamic thinking and to understanding the emotional life of individuals, groups and organisations.

Over the coming editions of the newsletter, we would like to introduce Every Member—a regular feature celebrating the people who make up our community.

Each edition, we hope to share the story of one of our members: what first drew them to psychodynamic thinking, the work they do, the joys and challenges they encounter, and the ideas that continue to shape their practice. In doing so, we hope to celebrate the richness of our membership, strengthen our sense of connection, and learn from one another's different experiences.

What has stayed with you?

Psychodynamic thinking often lingers. A sentence from a paper, a moment in supervision, something a client said, a conversation after a webinar, or an experience within a group may continue to unfold long after the moment has passed.

Every member carries different threads of experience, curiosity and understanding. Woven together, they become part of the rich fabric of the APPCIOS community.

We would love future newsletters to become a place where members share some of those threads.

Whether it is a short reflection, a piece of writing, a creative response, a book recommendation, artwork, or simply a question that has stayed with you, we warmly invite you to contribute.

There is no expectation to have reached a conclusion. Often it is the ideas still unfolding, the questions we continue to carry, and the threads we are still gathering that invite us to think together.
